So the big news in my life would be that I am now a functioning member of society. After graduating at the end of January, I have since begun working at WXII 12 News in Winston-Salem as the Weekend Assignment Edito. It's exciting and new. I moved into an apartment near Wake Forest University and spend a lot of time with Will, my friend from high school. We're talking about getting an apartment together sometime after he graduates.
It is cool and interesting to be working in a professional setting. There are some very obvious differences from college work:
1.) You're much more on your own. On the weekends there is maybe one other person in the entire building from about 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
2.) I feel much more disconnected from the total product. While at Elon, I used to be a part of EVERY step of production from newsgathering, to reporting in the field, to editing, to the show's actual production. At WXII, I am behind the desk and stay there for the most part.
3.) Different news stations value different things. Some go with great promotions people, other awesome technology, others big competent staffs, and others hot graphics. I always thought the best station was the one with the best of all of that. However, budgets require stations to specialize. Only in the big markets do you get everything.
There are also things similar to college work that I didn't expect.
1.) My news director is really nice. I always had this vision of bosses being uber tough and mean. He is actually very supportive. He leads by encouraging.
2.) Some companies are much better to work for than others. Hearst is a good company.
Cheers
